She shivered back her body's urge That quivered round her waist And welcomed then the fuel she'd purge, Accustomed to the taste. She felt it stretch her guts inside And knelt upon the tile, Releasing then the face she'd hide, Consigned to spilling bile. She'd weep upon each wretched gasp And hunger for the rest, Then retch again her stomach's last While pains shot down her chest. Once more sweating, spent and shaken She'd crawl in front of mirrors To admire the loss she'd taken And reaffirm her fears. One Sided Surface He lay there, oblivious to exactly how much time had passed or even what condition he was in, but quietly mesmerized by the only thing that entreated itself upon his vision: tall flames of a menacing ocher snaking into and out of his fading sight. The Call of the Sublime

Edmund Burke wrote an essay on the descriptions and differences of the sublime and the beautiful, and after having read it, I find myself strangely attached to his specific characterization of the sublime.  That any writer who approaches the two with such rigorous methodology would uniformly state the strongest emotional response are those of fear, terror, anxiety, apprehension or the like, as opposed to his contemporary's infatuation with conventional beauty, at first perplexes me. Have you ever had a dream, that you were so sure was real? What if you were unable to wake from that dream? How would you know the difference between the dream world and the real world?
